COURSE DESCRIPTION: Covers basic theories of the development of the child from conception through age 5. An inter-disciplinary approach will be used to develop course content, research and resource materials.

MAJOR OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify and understand the basic needs of individuals

2. Identify and understand the developmental tasks of each age group concerned

3. Identify and understand the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of each age group

4. Identify and understand the aspects of heredity and environment that have an impact on the developing child

5. Gain an understanding of issues and theories in early childhood development today

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Attend class, be on time, and remain for entire session.

2. Complete all exams and quizzes.

3. You are responsible for any material covered in class whether you are present or not.

4. All materials include: materials discussed or presented in class, lectures, films, handouts, guest speakers, etc.

5. If there is something you need help with or have any questions about, please see me or call for an appointment.

6. If you are having trouble meeting the above requirements, please make an appointment to see me immediately so that we can work together to resolve any problems before they become overwhelming.

GRADES: Course grades are based on the following:

Attendance and quizzes (Question of the day) 40%
6 essay exams 10% each

You are responsible for all information covered in the class sessions whether you are present or not. If you are absent, it would be to your advantage to get class notes from a classmate and pick up any handouts from me.

1. Late assignments: Unless there is a documented emergency or a prearrangement authorized by me, all late papers will be penalized 10%  of the possible score for each week late.

2. Possible changes in this syllabus: You should bring this syllabus with you to class to make any changes that may be made at the discretion of the instructor in order to better meet class needs. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check for any changes made. The changes could be in any of the following ways:

a. number of assignments given and/or dates

b. topic covered on daily/weekly plan

Rewrite Policy:

You may rewrite any paper for a better grade. You must turn your paper in early or on time to do a rewrite. Rewrites must be completed within 1 week of the original due date.
