Readings:
Planning and Administering Early Childhood Programs. Celia A. Decker and John R. Decker. Prentice Hall. 1997
Journal articles.
Title 22, Community Care Licensing regulations for early childhood programs (will be provided).
Handouts provided in class.
Written Work:
All assignments must demonstrate college-level content and skill, including organization and analysis. Please make every effort to type or word-process your assignments; do not enlarge the type on your word processor in order to fill up more space with your writing. If you must handwrite your work, then do so neatly in black or blue ink. All grammar and spelling must be correct (in-class writing may be more informal). All work must be submitted on the due date. If it is one class late, the grade will be lowered by 10%. Late papers may be turned in no later than the first class after the due date.
Course requirements:
ONGOING:
Regular and timely attendance (arriving on time and staying throughout the class) and active participation in class.
To some extent the class will be based on shared experiences, analyses and responses; small groups working together will complete some of the projects. Your input is essential if you and your fellow students are to benefit from the class, just as communication and collaboration are essential to a well-administered ECE program. 50 points
Reading/writing assignments
Reading must be completed before the class for which it is assigned. You will be discussing and/or writing in class about assigned reading. Since your grade will be determined by the thoughtfulness of your response, you will need to have read the articles carefully before you come to class. Any writing assignments that are assigned for a particular class must be turned in at the beginning of the class; they will not be accepted at any later time. 50 points
SPECIAL PROJECTS (details on all of the following will be provided)
1. Staff handbook/personnel policies assessment 50 points
Director interview report. A written report on a specific Director’s methods of providing staff supervision, guidance, feedback and evaluation and how this director maintains staff morale, based on an interview with the Director. 100 points
Licensing test 50 points
A class report on a specific topic (topics to be announced). This will require that you spend some time "researching" your topic; your sources of information will depend to some extent on the topic you choose. Minimally you will need to find relevant journal articles/books in the library; you may also need to interview local directors and/or contact local and national professional organizations and government agencies. You may report to the class what information you have found and submit an outline of your presentation (but not a formal written paper) or you may write a formal paper. 100 points
Final exam You will need to purchase a 3-ring notebook. Your final will be the submission of a notebook or portfolio that you have kept all semester. It should be a resource upon which you can draw at any time as you pursue your career. In it, you will collect:
any in-class writing you have done
write-ups of any group projects completed in class (unless the group as a whole does only one write-up)
the projects you have completed
any handouts you have received in class
any other materials you may have collected or written during the semester that might be useful to you in your present or future career as an administrator/supervisor. You will need to write a 1-2 paragraph response to any outside materials you collect for your notebook.
write-ups of additional program visits you may make: write a 3-4 paragraph analysis of how the program appears to be organized/administered, based on what evidence you are able to observe (unless, in fact, you are able to speak with any staff members and get specific information).
Your notebook will be graded on the basis of organization (by topic), neatness, and depth. 100 points
